Belorusization

That the southwest of Republic of Belarus, including Kobrin district, are as in direct and figuratively on boondocks of the Belarusian ethnos, nedvuznachno I testify such authoritative sources as E. Kartsev's two-volume book "Belarusians", monumental "Dyyalektalagichny the atlas belaruskay mova", Minsk, 1963, etc.

If to speak about distribution and influence of Belarusian and culture in Kobrin district for the last half a century, then it until now has extremely superficial character and is mainly spread from above and what is called in half of heat: step forward, two steps backwards. It is indicative to some extent that in pre-war Poland on primordially Belarusian lands with the connivance of the authorities at one time the Belarusian cultural and educational organizations "Belarusky Bulk" and "Tavarystva Belaruskay Schools" enjoyed wide popularity, - in Kobrin district these organizations completely were absent. From the moment of reunion of the western Belarus with BSSR in September, 1939 teaching at all schools passed only to Russian. Same occurred after exile of the German invaders whereas Belarusian and literature were allocated with nothing from other objects of teaching.

Only since the beginning of the 90th the belorusization of all links of national education, since detsadik, became is forced to be imposed from above, despite of the public wishes, lack of the prepared shots and textbooks. The Kobrin administration especially succeeded in it, having appeared in the list of 17 areas boasting of a full belorusizaitsa whereas one hundred other areas of the republic preferred to refrain from imprudent decisions reasonably. How here the full belorusization had no strong reasons, showed result of a national referendum of 1995 when the overwhelming mass of respondents supported the Belarusian-Russian bilingualism in all-republican scale. And as a result of will of parents school teaching is transferred to Russian again.

And with variable result heads of different departments and levels did to Raznovremenno attempts to translate at least office office-work into a state language. The final result was unambiguously deplorable. At present the formal belorusization externally affects language of the seals and stamps of state institutions, signs of the same establishments and shops, street plates, names of routes of local transport and in broadcasting which is completely transferred on alien to local listeners "to a matchyn mova". At the same time the local rayonka "the Kobrin messenger" passes to bilingualism more and more considerably.

October, 1995.
