Died in the last ditch

Already 60 years passed since the beginning of that public tragedy that claimed the life of every fourth (and according to the latest data - every third) inhabitant of our republic, on June 22, 1941... This date will remain to one of the most tragic pages in the book of our history forever...

In the morning on June 22 enemy planes rushed into the Soviet air space. Air fights over Kobrin were started already at 4 o'clock when 70 fascist "yunkers" razed to the ground several city quarters, the station and part of airfield. The blow assumed the 123rd aviation regiment under command of the major Boris Nikolaevich Surin. Most likely, fascists were well informed on an arrangement of our military facilities - the first German bombs pleased precisely on a parking lot of planes. Fortunately, the major Surin in four hours prior to invasion of the opponent ordered to clean from an airfield our "YAKS" and "seagulls". Planes disguised in a bush, previously having equipped with ammunition. In the field the runway had some faulty "seagulls" - them and bombed "yunkersa" the first minutes of a raid. One God knows how many our planes would not rise in air if not these "decoy seagulls"...

Unequal air fight lasted 13 hours. Our fighters fought to death, but the strategic initiative was all the same held by the opponent, Groups of enemy planes ran on the city one by one - each of them contained from 20 to 60 "yunkers" and "Messerschmitts" armed "to the teeth".

The major Surin also participated in fight on an equal basis with all. He made four fighting departures and shot down three planes of the opponent. During the last departure the commander of a regiment was fatally wounded, but held on to airfield - rescued the car...

In air fight over Zhabinka our 4 fighters faced eight enemy planes and brought down three of them. At the end of fight at the lieutenant Ryabtsev a unit of fire ended and it rammed the opponent's plane. It was one of the first air rams of the Great Patriotic War. The military fate then was on the party of our pilot, and he survived. But very much it is not constant and whimsical, this military fate... The lieutenant Ryabtsev died on July 31, 1941 near Leningrad...
In the first day of war fighters of the 123rd aviaregiment destroyed 30 enemy planes. However losses were too big, and soon 12 escaped fighters were thrown to Pinsk.

On the earth near Kobrin of fascists the 22nd tank division (commander major general Victor Pavlovich Puganov) and group of the lieutenant colonel Manevich "met" the 28th shooting case under Vasily Stepanovich Popov's command. About 10 o'clock in the afternoon on June 23 they strengthened defense on Tevli's line - Andronovo - Patriki and kept under a powerful impact of the 12th army case of the opponent till 16 o'clock. However superiority of fascists in aircraft, artillery and tanks was decisive. The troops of the 4th army exhausted by heavy fights (commander lieutenant general Alexander Andreevich Korobkov) were forced to recede. During tank battle at. A name-day the major general V. P. Puganov died.

On June 23 Kobrin was occupied by fascists. Release will come only in 1124 days in new battles, new heroes here. But we remember those who in the first days of war died for the native earth in the last ditch and we will never forget. Imperishable memory... Eternal glory...
