In memory of heroes tankmen of the 22nd tank division

The T-44 tank is installed in 2003 in Kobrin in memory of heroic feats of the tankmen of the 22nd tank division participating in the first fights of the Great Patriotic War. Grateful descendants put on July 20, 2004 a monument.

The 22nd tank division was created in March, 1941 in the Western Special military district on the basis of the 29th armored brigade. The division was a part of the 14th mechanized case and was deployed in the city of Brest, in two kilometers from border. By the beginning of the Great Patriotic War in a division there were 235 tanks, 34 tools and 8 thousand 800 people of staff. The division was completed with easy T-26 tanks. The crew of the tank consisted of 3 people. The T-26 tank was the easy tank with bullet-proof armor, was armed with a 45-millimetric gun and a machine gun of caliber 7,62 millimeters. Engine capacity made 66 horsepowers that allowed the tank to gather speed to 30 kilometers per hour. The tank had a course stock on the highway to 225 kilometers.

During the first hours wars Hitlerite troops put an aim massive fire raid in the locations of equipment and arms of a division. As a result of a shelling the division lost the most part of tanks, artillery and cars. The raid destroyed artillery warehouses with ammunition and fuel warehouses.

To 12 o'clock in the afternoon on June 22, 1941 the 22nd tank division left to the area of concentration. In the second half of day on June 22, 1941 the division under command of the major general Puganov V.P. engaged with the 3rd tank German division.

Near Zhabinkaya the division engaged with the German tanks again, but under the threat of an environment was forced to depart to Kobrin. During the movement to Kobrin the division was attacked by the German aircraft and, without having air cover, suffered heavy losses.

Participating in encounter attack with the Hitlerites who broke to the area of airfield of the 123rd destructive aviation regiment in the city of Kobrin in the T-26 tank the commander of a division major general Puganov Victor Pavlovich died on June 24, 1941. Command of a division was accepted by the colonel Kononov I.V.

Under blows of superior forces of Hitlerites the 22nd tank division was forced to recede and near Slutsk within three days from June 25 to June 28, 1941 conducted defensive actions with the 3rd German tank division. By the outcome on June 28, 1941 the division lost in fights and from blows of aircraft of the opponent all the tanks and artillery. In it there were 450 people and 45 cars.

The staff of the 22nd tank division showed examples of fearlessness and courage in fight and, having even lost all military equipment in fights, did not let go the military weapon.

The monument in Kobrin is a symbol of courage, heroism and a holy duty of the soldier - the defender of the Homeland.
