The house where steps are not heard

The ancient mansion in Kobrin remembers heroes of former times. The estate is built in the 18th century. According to the legend, there lived in its rooms A. V. Suvorov. Whether so it, historians, however, argue still. However with the house are cast in the lot other, not less eminent owners.

Before World War II it was called "Traugutt's estate". "One-storeyed, wooden, plastered and whitewashed. With a gontovy chetyrekhskatny roof, an open porch on four columns" — one of guides of the 30th years of the last century so describes the house. On an entrance door it is specified only now that "there lived A. V. Suvorov here in 1797 and 1800". Who, perhaps, the few will tell such Traugutt now.

He was called Romuald. Was born 4 on January (16), 1826 in Shestakovo's estate of the Kobrin County (nowadays Kamenetsky area). Made quite good career in the Russian army: participated in the Crimean war, in suppression of the Hungarian revolution. But it happened so that at Traugutt two children, the grandmother on the maternal line who was bringing up him since the birth and then and the wife die. He resigns and comes back to Kobrin district where without guardianship there were left two oldest daughters.

Romuald begins to settle cases of inheritance, buys the modest house, that "Suvorov" near the Peter and Paul church. Suvorov and Traugutt's destinies intertwined in fancy knot. In Kobrin shlyakhtich Romuald Traugutt got acquainted with Antonina Kosciusko, the grandniece of Tadeush, the leader of the revolt suppressed by the generalissimo.

Traugutt marries Antonin Kosciusko, takes resignation and lodges in Ostrovye's manor of the Kobrin County. When in the summer of 1862 local peasants met the new sir, he was only 36 years old. High growth, tightened, with magnificent black moustaches. Always with quiet, slightly ironic look. The elegant civil suit did not hide a martial bearing. Romuald was sure that already nothing will intrude upon his leisure. The family lived in a solitude, seldom visiting neighbors. And the house in the city was leased under hotel.

And suddenly in January, 1863 the message comes to the estate: beyond Bug shlyakhetsky revolt began! In February rebels already took Pruzhana and moved to the pinsky woods. When fire of revolt was thrown on the Kobrin County, ambassadors from the local nobility suggested to head fight to Traugutt. As to it it was difficult for Russian officer to make such decision. But it accepted it...

The group of insurgents consisted of a shlyakhta, the former officials, landowner employees and peasants. They were armed with fowling pieces, pistoles and country braids why were called kosiner.

Insurgents lost almost all fights with imperial troops. Torn off, hungry, pursued by Cossacks, Traugutt's people disappeared on the woods and bogs. Romualda overcame fever. Then he decides to dismiss group and to make the way one by one in Bialowieza Forest. Itself disappears in Lyudvinovo's estate at Pyotr Ozheshko — the husband of Elisa Pavlovskaya who by the name of the spouse became world renowned as the classic of the Polish literature. Elisa sympathized with Traugutt, and he lived in her manor a half of June, 1863. In July Ozheschko personally brought Traugutt to border with Poland that that could reach Warsaw and take cover from the Russian police.

But Traugutt was not going to hide. He soon becomes "dictator" of revolt, tries to take a revenge at least in Poland: will organize regular army and even wins round many peasants. But everything is ineffectual...

A month later after in March, 1864 in Vilna arrested and executed Kalinovsky, in Warsaw it was detained also by Traugutt. On August 5 it was hung up together with another "leaders of mutiny" on walls of the Warsaw citadel.

Eight years later after tragic death of the husband Antonin Traougoutt-Kosciusko decided to marry. Adam Mickiewicz's nephew became her elect. With Frantsishk Mickiewicz she lodged in that "Suvorov's house". Probably, here sometime there will be a memorial table with names of all its former inhabitants whose steps quietly respond from the past...
