My memoirs. Volume second. Chapter 5-8.

Chapter 5
My uncle Hon Maties. – Absolutely other house. – Rest. – Sender Rozenblyum. – I had hopes. – Landowner Lyubovicheva. – Rozenblyum's energy. – His love to the landowner or on the contrary. – As treat it. - Work. – I remain in Makarovtsakh.
In one fine or nasty morning I went to the Grodno County. Until I reached to Krinkov, at me did not remain in a pocket not a stiver to reach Makarovtsev, eight versts which are from there at distance. I asked in Krinkakh on Sender Rozenblyum from Makarovtsev. I was told not much much as the fact that the landowner fell in love with him. Being, however, not the first youth, she, besides love, handed it property worth hundred thousand rubles. It, according to stories of people, - big apikoyres, but very good, honest and kind person and the big philanthropist.
I employ the cart in Makarovtsy and to pay the carrier, I put clothes in Krinkakh. The carrier brought me to Makarovtsakh to the uncle Hon Matiecu, to Sender's father and the brother of my grandmother to Beyly-Russia. The uncle lived in own house, near a manor, together with the divorced daughter. I was presented as the grandson Bale Russia, and I heat was accepted.
The uncle – the scientific Jew and maskil, very moderate, liberal, capable to release a kind joke which for someone will be as a prickle sideways. Two years as he went blind: steam in a krinkovsky bath suddenly blinded it, but to speak with it – very interestingly. The daughter – though very ugly, but clever and business.
In the country – the field and the wood and kind, open and simple provincial Jews with whom to me it was easily breathed. I forgot the troubles at all; as well the uncle was glad to me, having with whom to spend time. I told it about the adventures.
The uncle told the son and ordered to wait to me.
"Everything will be as it should be", - it encouraged me.
There arrived Sender with the landowner in the evening. I did not believe the eyes. Sender was rather beautiful young man of twenty eight years, the landowner, the elderly woman with a live look, kept very simply, but also is cunning.
They started talking to me in Polish which I, unfortunately, did not understand. I attentively looked narrowly at them. In an hour left. They brought the uncle from the house and have a talk about me quietly in the carriage. Also came to a conclusion that I definitely suit them - they just need the young man that the uncle right there transferred to me. In the house it is very convenient there – with the clever, educated Jew. It is necessary, besides, good business – what else is necessary?
In the long winter evenings the uncle told me about the son. It graduated from small public school. Was very capable to languages and the diligent boy and in perfection learned Russian, German and Polish, being in Brisk the main language. On reaching the son of twenty years the uncle asked to find Aron-Leyzera to him the good place in an excise. The grandfather suited it to the inspector's position at distillery at the landowner. There he was pleasant to the managing director and when that was transferred to the Grodno County, took Sender with itself and put it to higher position. He lodged in the estate at the city on which shlyakhtich Lyubovich held rent. Lyubovich was very rich person – for two hundred thousand rubles, but very simple. He went to the estate barefoot as well the landowner. Passable through fields, it was in the habit to hold full pockets of boiled peas and to gnaw on the road.
The landowner was from very noble. Her first husband was the chief auditor of the Grodno province. But the chief auditor got sick with a consumption and was ill four years. Died in big poverty. She has nothing was to live. But she was very clever, and during stay of the Minister of Justice in Grodno, during lifetime of the husband, he spent at them two hours and, having been surprised to her mind, suggested to present it to the empress.
She long waited when the minister keeps the promise, but the minister soon resigned, and it after death of the husband strongly grew poor and it had to go to some manor the housekeeper; meanwhile the party with rich Lyubovich, the person elderly already was presented, but it agreed: it is better to be to itself the hostess, than to serve at strangers. The clever and dexterous woman so settled that the husband obeyed her as the small child.
It was avaricious, and she externally behaved the same as as if agreeing, but secretly doing that it was necessary for it. By the way, it also was quite avaricious.
Sender appeared at it in the estate as the inspector at distillery. Lyubovich died over time, having left it inheritance in forty thousand rubles. It had thirty thousand earlier. Lyubovich's son, the doctor by profession, received the estate, and she removed Makarovtsa at the landowner Dobrozhinsky, the big charlatan and the futile person. He handed over it the estate for twenty four years, and for what was paid by her in cash, after twenty four years cheap sold, taking into account a debt in fifteen thousand. Now everything concentrated in her hands. Rozenblyum refused an excise and became her house-keeper. It was not necessary to worry because of an excise to it as and so soon the excise passed to treasury, and almost all Jews were dismissed.
Rozenblyum strong undertook economy. Began to manage in all ways. Very strong and capable person, he managed to put a manor in order. It worked day and night, minutes without having a rest, and for increase of spirit of workers did the same as they: guys carried manure, and it also carried manure; carried hay – and it carried; stacked, loaded, plowed, harrowed, sowed, reaped, threshed, raked up a rake in a barn – all together with workers. In the winter it awoke with a lamp of all guys in four mornings and went to work to a barn. And well paid them.
Because also became at it three times more, than at others, and at night, after work, he had supper with the landowner and read the German economic magazines.
For orchards it took good gardeners, purifying garden waters, than before neglected. Let the best and most expensive fishes in fresh water, and nearby constructed the picturesque bridge with flowers around. Put also benches, and updated everything and decorated.
Walls in sheds for cattle were densely imposed with hay that slightest the breeze did not get. There it was warm, as in the house. Many cows were bought. In three years of the field – instead of five shocks of rye and wheat from a morgue 1 began to give on eight, and reached what in places the earth gave on the whole twelve shocks. And all this is in three years.
The landowner was very happy with its work, his talents and diligence. It found in it all advantages: capable, kind, hard-working, courageous, courageous, beautiful, intelligent, clever; capable to work as the born peasant, and to keep as the born count; in Polish spoke how the born Warsaw Pole, and in Russian as the Muscovite.
The landowner "was over head and ears in love" with it, on expression of Shomera2 and, apparently, in a madness rush, wrote down on it all state.
On the other hand, that to it? Her "beloved" – the person not some shlimazl, and from money will be enough advantage.
The landowner loved horses. At it bred the best horses, it was its weakness. Once paid the huge prices for her horses. A horse – pure, thoroughbred, harmonous, she cared for them as children.
It had carriages the best. Yes she will forgive me – not she was carriages, and Dobrozhinsky, his property and possession. One sledge, I remember, were above the house, upholstered outside of fine, the soft skin decorated with gold and silver, and from within - expensive velvet, with any jewelry. In this carriage there were on four corners two velvet sofas. In sledge it was necessary to harness six kind horses: the usual four could hardly drag such "ship".
To them there came many guests – neighboring landowners from Krinkov, Sokolki and Berestovitsa, the doctor, intermediaries, magistrates, asessor, etc. From Grodno the district police officer with officials, sometimes with wives, sometimes one on a visit came, spending days and weeks.
Guests were not shocked by Rozenblyum's origin or maybe they preferred not to show it. In the presence of the most notable guests Rozenblyum did the part, also and it kept freely among a great number of rich guests. Saw at them almost as at Jews: small shot glasses sweet vodka …
I already told that I was very glad to go to Makarovtsy. Heart fought with hope: at such rich relative it is not necessary to worry about earnings. Besides - I am waited by Grodno, the city of Education, with books and bright people.
And I remained in Makarovtsakh …

Chapter 6
Rozenblyum's trips to Grodno. – Bride. – Difficult situation. – Landowner's intrigues. – Smith. – Intrigues amplify. – The bride cries. – Departure home. – The landowner won.
Rozenblyum often was in Grodno which is in five versts from Makarovtsev where got acquainted with maskily A.G. holding a six-cool classical gymnasium. Rozenblyum fell in love with the daughter A.G., the beautiful girl. I do not know whether cunning Lyubovicheva counted that the wedding will be result of her love to Rozenblyum. Most true, she understood that it just entertainment for several years, and then when she grows old or will weaken, Rozenblyum marries that whom his soul will wish. But externally never showed it.
She learned about its feelings to the Grodno young lady and pretended that she agrees to his marriage on the daughter A.G. Bylo it, however, abnormally: to marry and remain with the young beautiful wife in the house of the landowner who had to it the love claims … And, giving it the consent, she at the same time, apparently, considered such plans which would damage it sincere love to the girl.
Strongly keen Rozenblyum ordered to harness the carriage, having told the landowner that he goes to Grodno to sign conditions. Without hesitation, she gets the diamond bracelet and for three thousand rubles of hairpins and offers it in the form of a gift to the bride … And he, happy, leaves. Having signed conditions, he comes back good luck to the landowner and … she wishes him good luck.
In May, during general departure for dachas, without waiting that he asked whether it is impossible to invite the bride for the summer, Lyubovicheva suggests it to send the carriage for the bride in advance.
"I will try, - she hints it, - that the bride derived full pleasure". Also advises it to arrange such suitable for time - pro-driving of young couple of a thing as a beautiful swing, beautiful small crew, etc.
On May 15th it goes with two footmen to Grodno and brings the bride to itself(himself) to the estate. The landowner warmly and gently kissed each other with the bride, she was given the certain room with servants, and the groom with the bride have a good time. Because of the bride it already works less though outside – summer, work burns, but such is the power of the woman!
The landowner even "warmly" smiled, looking at them, but the disappointment and bile disappeared in her smile much. Before he spent time with it, and now here – the bride, besides – young. And who knows – that he happens when the bride becomes a wife: whether it will banish it from a manor? All its property is written down on it! As she could do such stupid thing! It was, probably, the most hard time in her life.
As in all big estates, the landowner had a smith; called him David. As everything was accepted at all landowners keeping around the Jew and to him council as well Lyubovicheva had the smith especially for the secret affairs and frauds trusting and asking it.
Just when Rozenblyum was a groom, the smith at it was the only adviser; and to it it poured out all the heart.
It had a strange weakness to Jews. She liked to ask simple Jews on all Jewish rules and customs, on their way of life, on the most intimate things, wishing to know all this and to understand. And knowing Jews, mostly criticized the Jewish women, considering as their big shlimazlnitsa, bad hostesses, raspustyokha, etc. In particular, they are lazy. Because of its sharp tongue it turned out so that all her closest Jewish neighbors day and night worked hard.
The landowner kept thinking of a young couple that it deprived of rest, and somehow in the morning at breakfast when the bride still was in a bedroom, suddenly addressed Rozenblyum:
"You know that I thought? You keep in bank twenty thousand under low interest, and could give them now to the father-in-law A.G. that it transferred them to reliable hands under bigger percent. It could take seven-eight percent. It is a pity – you easily can have one thousand rubles a year".
It had a simple calculation: courtship will fall apart – it will not allow it. Twenty thousand rubles obviously were gone. It will strongly affect Rozenblyum, and from now on he poosterezhyotsya to think of courtship … Twenty thousand rubles are the sum, and Rozenblyum ten times will think before to look for the bride. The landowner did not grudge money: all the same it was already not its money. For the sake of its plans Rozenblyum could suffer.
The offer was pleasant to the lover and the confused Rozenblyum, and it executed it at once.
Here Lyubovicheva began to cling strongly to the bride, to express her the big love and devotion as the loving mother to the only daughter and specially to indulge, convincing her that she can sleep at least fifteen hours a day while Rozenblyum slept no more than four-five hours, etc.
It inspired in it that at young age it is very useful to sleep much … The bride who had nothing to do now and who, by the way, and at home slept till kind ten hours really very much grew very lazy, did not force itself to ask and – slept …
The landowner gave it three servants and ordered to dance to them around it – one that cared for her food and drink, another would be – to dress it at clothes and to undress that the young young lady had not to move with a finger, - and the third that was at other that will be required. It was very strictly ordered all three that it was not necessary to the young young lady, My God keep, to lift a straw from the earth.
In the morning to it brought in bed a breakfast and tea, and the landowner came to ten in a bedroom to it, took seat with it nearby, ironed it and ironed, spoke and spoke, spending with it thus time in conversations – long, sweet and false, holding it in a bed till twelve o'clock.
Rozenblyum from nine to ten had breakfast, and here the landowner by the way, by the way, said hello to him from the bride who was still lying in a bed. And what here it? Where to it to hurry? Here it also lies …. Hours it went to twelve usually to the bride; that usually, really, lay in a bed.
And if he noticed to the landowner:
"How the person can lie in the afternoon in a bed?" - She answered with a sweet voice it:
"Child still … Anything …"
At three o'clock Rozemblyum came to have dinner, but also then near him there was no bride that with her together is – the bride at first put on and washed hour two. Right after that Lyubovichev gave it something sweet that there was no appetite to have dinner, and wearily declared:
"I would lie down at you in a bedroom. Lie down with me, we will talk a little. It is so pleasant to talk …"
And closer by three o'clock the landowner went to check whether Rozenblyum came already to have dinner, having left the weak, naive girl in a bedroom. On his question:
"Where bride?" - the silent, soft answer followed:
"It still lies on a sofa …". Rozenblyum began to hate the girl, on - so much inclined to laziness. His cheeks reddened for anger.
"Well, and that? – softly and with pleasure the landowner stood up, - the young child … is unimportant …"
Rozenblyum who was so liking to work, act could not agree with it in any way, and gradually changed the attitude towards the bride. Began to move away from it, having given to work even stronger.
The dear, naive bride noticed change and complained of it to the landowner. The landowner said that Rozenblyum is the person of work and in general – is far from love and family happiness.
"For it, - said, having pouted the landowner, - there is only a work, work and work … He takes out manure from a stable; it is also scary avaricious; if you see in it any generosity, then all this my care; I do not allow it to stint that it is the loveliest to it on light.
The poor thing bride, without understanding anything, answered it:
"Nothing, after a wedding it will behave differently. I will not allow it to work very much. I before a wedding about it will talk to it".
The landowner objected specially cold tone:
"Unless will help? Hopeless case …"
So the landowner according to the plan reminding intrigues from some melodrama acted.
And Rozenblyum also consulted now on it – whether not to refuse to him courtship? To the girl he grew cold. It could not anything decide on, but it, the clever woman, dissuaded him, allegedly taking the side of the bride:
"The bride still will become at us a person, - she inspired in him false and cunning. – Of course, she is a shlimazlnitsa, the idler and a sonlivitsa. The bed is more expensive than everything to it. But it – only to a wedding. On the other hand – why to you the beautiful hostess? You will have maids and servants, and everything will be kept in an order".
"No, and at the maid it is necessary to be the hostess".
It is clear, that from words of the landowner he well understood that it for it – any not the bride, as if she at the same time finished it. Her arrangements were worse than other otgovor.
And he for the first time addressed for council the father what it never did before.
The father convincingly proved to it that the landowner not in forces also should not be able to sustain, assume that he married.
"It – is very simple, my son. You – everything that it has. In itself it is still not really old. But you will bring into the house – to her house – the young, beautiful woman. It will burst – has to burst! She speaks about a wedding – but not seriously. It is only such maneuver, my son. I do not know whether you will be able to marry in general, you so far - at Lyubovicheva in the house.
In the middle of summer when all vegetables in kitchen gardens and fruit in gardens already kept up, the landowner told that it is necessary to send to the matchmaker to Grodno a van with vegetables and fruit.
"The matchmaker … it is bad, - she advised".
Harnessed three horses in a big van, loaded fruit, oil, good dry cheese, and David smith went to bring all this to the house to the matchmaker.
Slowly the landowner told the smith that if to ask him how she will see off the daughter in Makarovtsakh time and as looks, then to make a sour mine - a pier by it, daughters, it is not so good there. Of course, to it details – will begin to stick and ask that with the daughter, then he has to as if against will to recognize that to it is very sad there. Rozemblyum treats it not as the bride, for him there is only one Lyubovicheva, and the bride does not use any attention in the estate. Nobody to it shows respect, only one Lyubovicheva shows to it sympathy. But the bride in her is very much deceived, she does not know that her love and friendship – only external, and in soul she fatally hates it and takes great pain to slander. Who knows in what misfortune the landowner can involve it. He loves the landowner, but not the bride … The landowner is extremely clever, and is cunning – even more. Who knows that she can get up.
"To me just heart breaks off to look at your daughter, - he has to them tell, - there is nobody who would explain her her situation. Happiness that I happened to allocate for you a gift, and at the same time and to transfer her to the mountain …"
In the house of the matchmaker groan rose: only daughter, such successful. Offered it good parties – with doctors, lawyers, etc. much the earning persons. But did not look at them – considered that the daughter will be happier for such rich man. But they missed that Rozenblyum has such affairs with the Christian that she gave him all state. To be together with such Christian – precisely how to be to two cats in one bag. And who knows – the daughter already so can fell in love with him what she cannot be separated from it? In the house the mourning set in. Began to reflect – what to do what to begin with? It was decided to write it the letter and to send it with the smith that that transferred to it directly to hands. In the letter to write that they, her parents, very much worry about it and ask that it arrived for a while to Grodno. They cannot arrive to it because of the landowner. Two months as it is in the estate, the summer will come to an end soon, it can already go home.
At the same time the smith was told that he told to the daughter that the father with mother are somehow restless for her and that mother cries. Envious persons somehow badly speak about her groom.
David smith handled an issue from all directions and spoke even more, than it was necessary. Having arrived home, transferred the letter to the bride, having added that it is necessary and it is not necessary from itself. Then told about the actions to Lyubovicheva, having reported that in return they will do everything possible that the wedding did not take place.
As well to Rozenblyum, on the advice of the landowner, the smith in confidence told that the matchmaker with svaty cry and complain that he threw their daughter. Apparently, the bride wrote to parents very disturbing letter, and they asked to tell it to the daughter that the father with mother cry, terribly worry and want that she right there came back home.
It strongly touched Rozenblyum though in soul he also was glad that to courtship the end.
David smith made the work very honestly so the landowner if did not hesitate, just would kiss him. But it gave one hundred to it. Now it was very much and is very happy.
After return of the smith in the estate big vanity rose. At everyone heart boiled, but at Lyubovicheva it boiled for pleasure that she so brilliantly implemented the plan. The bride will leave home now and will not return back any more. Thank God, everything is over. However, that the matchmaker gave twenty thousand to growth … But let it will choke with them – if only not to see his daughter any more.
But Rozemlyuma felt sorry money, and he already began to consider how to get out twenty thousand. It is fair to give a half of the sum to the bride. It really inflicted on it suffering. He was her groom. And now refuses courtship. Pay the bride money for such business. But how to pull out the rest?
As usual, he ran behind council to the landowner. In the evening, over a cup of tea, he to it as to the person who is not aware of business at all, told that he wants to break up with the bride that it for it the solved business.
"It is good still that I managed to look round and correct in time what I spoiled. I will cancel courtship. Apparently from David's story, it will not be difficult for me. But how to be with such large sum of money? Just trouble. To give a lot of money without guarantee … Big disappointment. … How to receive at least a half? A half was gone. All right. But the rest?
Lyubovicheva felt that she can speak. And she spoke … Her eyes burned.
"You know, - it could not constrain the pleasure, - consider by good luck that you were not stuck with such wife. You long would not live with this dismissed shlimazlnitsa lying for days on end and nights in a bed for which money – as dirt, is worse than that – the big egoist who is not thinking of anybody, except herself. Nobody is dear to it – neither the father, nor mother, nor the groom and the husband. You probably would receive blow from it. Your happiness that you escaped from such trouble".
And concerning money she told it that itself should not gnaw heart – anything: God will send still.
"You are, however, the weakling – she took carefully following step, - and itself of course you will not be able to be exempted from her. To find the clever person, the good friend that talked over with A.G. or wrote the letter …"
As the started automatic machine, the smith talked to the bride again. First of all, let it know that he is her best friend that he wants to rescue it and that as to the approximate Jewish girl it does not fit here. Here only go, go and go. Rozemblyum with the landowner – couple, but not with it. Lyubovicheva's nail is more expensive than all bride to Rozemblyum. And who knows – that else he can happen to it so it is impossible to be sure and in its safety. In a word, it should weigh well – whether to marry it. As there is only two choice: or it, Rozenblyum, has to Lyubovichev banish absolutely from the yard that it more here did not appear, or – that Rozenblyum began to live after a wedding in Grodno. It is possible even to transfer the estate to the landowner and to remove somewhere another; in money Rozenblyum has no shortcoming. If only wants, it can get everything. But it is unknown whether it will help – they have an old love …
The bride in a voice burst into tears, with spasms and with everything that is accompanied by female crying. David made noise, servants and servants came tearing along, sent for Rozenblyum. He right there came running, and it was rescued. On Rozenblyum, not the so bad person, all this made a painful impression. Having recovered, the bride told that she goes home.
Rozenblyum ordered to give the carriage next morning and went with the bride to Grodno to her parents. The bride did not want to kiss each other from Lyubovicheva before departure. At once any and all secrets were revealed – more the landowner had nothing to hide …
Having arrived to Grodno, the bride right there got sick in a bed, having declared that she is unhealthy, but to herself did not admit any doctors. Parents understood that the girl is sick from a grief. Rozenblyum was suppressed: did not talk to it at all, near the bride he sat a little, and among themselves they found a little what to speak about – and were only silent.
Having a little recovered, the beautiful and proud girl asked Rozenblyum to leave. The same was wanted also by parents, it is almost opened showing. It was not really pleasant to it. He understood that here want to get rid of it and though he and wished it, but after all it was difficult for it to endure it. And he left …
It happened some days before my arrival to Makarovtsy. As it was already told, they needed the person to write the letter to Grodno to the matchmaker under an assumed name. They chose me for such role and made for me the letter. I vividly scribbled it, partially from dictation of Rozenblyum, it was accepted and sent to Grodno together with "conditions".
In the letter it was reported that it gives ten thousand rubles to the bride, and ten will be fair to be returned to it. It is clear, that nobody saw money any more. Only I was fated to have from them advantage – "my" letter made good impression and strengthened my position.
I received business - a dairy farm. Lyubovicheva provided me milk on five kopeks for a pot. Oil then cost seven-eight rubles for pood. The tavern belonging to one Jew in the big house with an entrance, near the estate and with the Polish monastery, on a path between Krinkami and Grodno, I also received I paid how many I can.
I declared that I do not want to kill business at the Jew even if it is necessary to sit without bread. What the uncle answered that he will try to talk to the tenant whether that will take a compensation as heard that he is going to buy own tavern in the town of Orl, in four versts from Makarovtsev, maybe, it will take couple of hundreds of rubles and with the world will leave?
The uncle called him. The tenant declared that he really is going to buy Orlyansky tavern for six hundred rubles and if he is given so much, he with great pleasure will concede this tavern.
And occurred. Distances to the Jew five hundred rubles, and it before New year released tavern.

Chapter 7
Dairy farm with tavern. – Arrival of the wife. – Business goes. – Krinki. – Kriniksky thieves. – "Brothers". – Reb Dovid Mareyna. – My letter. – Gibyansky. – My trips to Grodno. – Hayche Gurvich. – Hayche and governor. – Talk in its "salon". - The emperor Alexander P. – his visit to Grodno.
Having received tavern for rent, I wrote to the wife that she arrived with all the things to Makarovtsy that we have "a good business" … here. It left, I went towards and brought to Makarovtsy the wife with two children …
The stern was in the good place – directly against it as I wrote, there was the Polish monastery; around lived a lot of shlyakhta, peasants – owners who did not drink simple vodka, and for vodka of the superior quality could pay much more, than for simple.
But the tavern was started, confused. The tenant was very simple person and did not know how to contain tavern for the shlyakhta demanding the best drinks and the delicate address.
Having taken tavern, I was very happy. Began to enter a lot of good and attracted a lot of shlyakhta. On Sundays it was full in all rooms, spacious as the field.
From Grodno I brought sweet wines, and from Krinkov – honey and wine – with own hand prepared by the widow Yokheved and known in all province. It took fifty kopeks for a pot, – and I sold with big benefit.
Rozenblyum gave me a good horse with the cart, and I – the person young still – with great pleasure went where it was necessary to me.
Having arrived for the first time to Krinki, I stopped at a shinkarka Yokheved. There was a fine day. Having tied a horse to a handrail before windows of the big house, against shops in the market, I entered the house. Having looked in a minute from a window at a horse, I saw that she costs with forward couple of wheels separately, and the vehicle with back wheels was wrapped on the party. Apparently, pulled out shkvoren1. I ran out on the street, asking where I got to shkvoren from the vehicle. Same it is quite strange. Sons Yokheved "calmed" me, having let know that it is a usual thing.
History is such: there were in Krinkakh two brothers filling with all theft in the district. They and were called by "brothers", and to all dealers, countrymen, land owners, intermediaries and tenants inevitably it was necessary to face them and to humour them: they still demanded to themselves respect, and having arrived to the county, everywhere met big honor. With them it was necessary to be known as it protected from thieves.
In case theft nevertheless happened, it was necessary to address brothers, and the stolen property was returned; and as I was a brand new eshuvnik, I was hinted that it is necessary to get acquainted with them that acquaintance will happen on a junket. I was frightened, struck: it that they are to meet thieves to look at their physiognomies moreover to offer them a hand. But I knew that sons Yokheved - people clever and noble and me will not twist in vain the head.
However to meet notable thieves it seemed to me difficult business, and having bought new shkvoren, I quietly went home, having avoided acquaintance.
I told about it to Rozenblyum, and he confirmed that all annually pay "brothers" and arrange for them junkets; but they are afraid of it as all administration – his good acquaintances. But especially you should not be at war with them. The district police officer with an asessor cannot be saved from them absolutely too. Therefore as I live in tavern, at the path, I should live with them peacefully and in case they are filled up to me in tavern, has to accept, give well them to them and their horses of food and drink, etc.
I took vodka in Krinkakh at reb Dovid Mareyna, the son-in-law of a gaon reb Izroyelya Salantera. Mareyna kept in Krinkakh the estate with distillery, was a Jew rich - thousands on eighty - and also scientific and clever, but God forbid what angry, as well as very proud – costed to someone – as it seemed to it - to touch his pride as it right there on it snatched with terrible insults.
It had, however, one good property: he was easily appeased and asked from the offended forgiveness whatever that was a pettiness. Regularly it happened that reb Dovid after the next flash right there cooled down. And feeling that offended the person, he already did not release for anything it until that tells that he forgave it and with it will not kiss each other.
At Mareyna in office always was to many people – all kriniksky shinkar and eshuvnik from the most remote villages. In two versts from Krinkov there was a bigger distillery which was also belonging to Jews. But there with everything the Jew by the name of Enta – the beautiful hostess, very beautiful and clever woman at whom the husband was the fifth wheel in the cart filled. Nobody knew it, and the plant worked under her name. Others did not even know that it had a husband. He was absolutely quite good person – the scientist knowing, but she was such strong Jew – "the Jewish hostess" – that if he even sat in office, nobody with it spoke about business.
It held several estates and two plants – and filled with everything. But she had to sell the vodka wholesale and to the remote districts, but not separate shinkaryam and to tenants of surrounding villages as all of them preferred to deal with reb Dovid Mareyna because of his big honesty, because of his word which was firm as iron. Whether he sold or bought whether rose in price or became cheaper - he never took it into consideration.
To tell the truth, sometimes took offense at it because of his wicked tongue, because of haste, because of angry vanity. Apologies it also not always removed offense from heart. But its honesty, honesty! - Here what all attracted; even the shinkar which ran into debt to it and not wishing to it to pay coming to buy vodka from Enta were forced to return, pay to it that is necessary, and further with it to trade. Reach for such dealer as a magnet.
Of course, I took vodka from Mareyna too. Took a vodka barrel in ten-fifteen buckets and went back. Mareyna did not know me at all and even had no time to talk to me. The young man comes for vodka – and it is fine.
I remember, Rozenblyum me somehow asked to tell Mareyne that that harms him what does not take away potatoes sold to it which to Rozenblyum was not where to store. Having arrived behind vodka, I transferred Mareyne Rozenblyum's words. But instead of the answer, reb Dovid looked at me for about a minute and suddenly snatched God forbid with what insults. In the room it was full to the people. It was a shame to me to raise eyes.
When I left, his son-in-law told it that I there is nothing here and that insults are absolutely inappropriate. Just offended in vain foreign young man. I left at once, and reb Dovid could not return me any more that as he usually did it, to ask forgiveness.
As I did not receive vodka, went to Enta and took that it was necessary to me. But its vodka was worse. And at heart at me it was not really good too. The case with Mareyna very much afflicted me. By the way, I was going to buy five hundred buckets of infections that would cost to me cheaper, and I could make such purchase only from Mareyna.
I did not want to tell Rozenblyum that I was offended reb by Dovid Moreyna – it did not befit to dismiss rumors. I kept thinking how to arrive and very much was annoyed.
In the city when I talked to people about Mareyna, all unanimously said to me that from reb Dovida it is possible and to suffer and only because with it it is good to trade. Still I was told that that case it afflicted that it to itself(himself) gnaws soul for the fact that offended me, and told that it is ready to give chetvertak to the one who will take me to him that before me to apologize and reconcile.
I thought and wrote the letter in a Hebrew way (mine to the togdayena the weapon), having calculated that I on the road behind vodka to Enta will pass by the kriniksky estate and with somebody I will give him.
I go somehow by the estate, and I see – there is just reb Dovid with several more Jews at gate, on the road. Took in head to transfer me to it personally to hands my letter. Showed at distance, sitting in the cart, the letter. He ran up, took, standing at my cart, the letter, opened and began to read. Already the beginning of the letter so was pleasant to it that he began to kiss and ask me with tears that I forgave him: he then did not know me, was angry, afflicted, etc. I told it that I forgave him, and did not manage to look back as it already pulls a horse to itself(himself) in gate. I speak:
"Rab Dovid, I already will come to you". He answers:
"No, I have to express you respect – itself to pull a horse for reins to office that all saw how I ask from you forgiveness".
After an exit my of a carriage, reb Dovid took me by an arm and carried out to office. There it was full to the people, and it by a loud voice declared:
"Misters, before all people I ask this young man me to forgive and I declare to you, the Lord that I was very not right, having offended him … six weeks ago"
Red Dovid ordered to bring a bottle old, fifteen-year prescription of wine with cookies and herring pie for all attendees, and right there, having proclaimed "le-haim", kissed me. In a carriage for me the vodka barrel was already prepared. Leaving, I was inspired with such relation reb Dovid and forgot all offenses.
So the rich man, the owner of some eighty thousand rubles behaved once.
Since then reb Moreyna "fell in love" with me. Really, between us there was something like love. Every week we had to see each other. And for the life I spent good hours at reb Dovid much.
Near Krinkov I found one more dear friend, future gebraist and the writer, Iosif of Gibyanskogo2, the young man of my years, maybe, a little more young. He was a son-in-law of the rural miller who gave it five hundred rubles of a dowry and five years of contents.
Gibyansky became a groom in fifteen years. His father-in-law before veins to Krinkakh, brought the groom to himself on Pesakh. Gibyansky preached in the kriniksky shul and caused a stir with the sermon not as the young man of fifteen years, and as the Jew of fifty. He married in sixteen years. Soon after that the father-in-law rented it a water-mill in the village and moved there to live, having taken with itself on bread young couple.
Gibyansky was known as the good gebraist who is beautifully writing in sacred language. One year prior to my emergence in Makarovtsakh reb Isroel Salanter, having come to rest to the son-in-law, reb Dovidu Mareyne, spent at it in the kriniksky estate the whole summer. The Kriniksky scientific youth – and Gibyansky among them - was for each lunch to a table. Gibyansky at that time wrote in "Ha-Magid" which reb Isroel Salanter read at a table. The Jewish world boiled from words reb Isroel …
With Gibyansky I very much made friends and visited him in the village, and he me – in the estate.
To tell the truth, I was not located to trade as others who sought to earn, have more more income, benefits, at the same time to flatter, be enough, overstrain, etc. things at all. Generally my tavern was very good, and by means of flattery I could achieve much from Rozenblyum. But I did not even try to approach him and the landowner to be pleasant. My head and soul aspired only to finding the capable, good, developed people that to communicate with them, spending time in reasonings and disputes. In it for me there was a pleasure.
To me somehow did not get thirst to have as much as possible money when the person cannot live without them, and having them – receives everything. Usually I was content with what is. Perhaps, it is a big shortcoming, and it is possible – big advantage. It is possible that relying only on money, I would not have anything. There was a lot of such who indulged in business of enrichment with big eagerness, but tried to obtain nothing. Who knows, who can tell!
Reb Dovid had the capable son, I with him too very much made friends and we often spent time in dreams and conversations … I strong undertook reading books across Haskala for what went to Grodno once again, allegedly for sale of oil and purchase of sweet vodka, actually in calculation to buy fresh books across Haskala there or - if it is impossible to buy - to esteem them. For the sake of one business there was no need to go so often - it was possible to leave every time on longer.
Often happening in Grodno and having relatives there, I got acquainted with a certain Hayche Gurvich, very attractive woman about whom It is necessary to tell in more detail.
First of all, she was a strong woman and in Grodno, on Skidler Street, on her house there was a plate with an inscription: "The house Hayche Gurvich" - with a surname of her father, but not husband. On it all house kept. I found it, was and it was presented to it. We were not close, but nevertheless relatives. She met me very friendly and, has to admit, made strong impression on me.
In the house it often had people of different classes and age. Young, mature and old, merchants, contractors, lawyers, doctors and just clever people. To it came for councils about trade, family questions – about everything. Being going to be for court, asked it how to conduct process, and she already learned – how to speak and how to behave. She also had to address to institutions. Even lawyers consulted on it in difficult cases or how to write the good contract between two partners. It was extremely wise – with sober mind and with sense of humour, capable of a good joke.
She earned from appeals and from lawsuits – on four, five thousand rubles a year. Especially big she was a philanthropist – for example, went to the chief of police, to the district police officer, to the governor. Sought to be good to Jews and almost always tried to obtain the. Absolutely will help one with trouble, to another – a little bit, but empty-handed will release nobody. Though tried to help with something.
For it "to go to the governor" was from easy affairs as well the governor derived pleasure from conversation with it. Her sharp jokes pricked it directly under sedmoyo an edge. Also it was necessary to laugh – to these brilliant, clever pricks.
Her husband was quite worthy, as well as scientific person but incapable too for fear of a mouth to open in its society. He just was afraid to tell something. This fear was felt not only by one her husband, but also all who were in her house - such were sharp her mind and language. And to be mocked by the woman – not too pleasant thing.
For the first time I spent at it on a visit several hours. With anybody of attendees I was not familiar. I looked narrowly at Hayche and her guests, listened to her wise speeches, estimated how it keeps as behaves, and decided to sit and be silent. She has to speak – as she is very clever.
She acquainted me with guests and detained longer – before leaving of the others. Apparently wanted to understand – that I for goods. Then invited me to a lunch. After a lunch went out for a walk with me. On the road asked to tell about my affairs – where, so to speak, my place in the world. Besides – it was very warm relatives, being interested in all details. For example: I go on affairs in Grodno, brought oil and cheese for sale and bought vodka and other goods. And in it it can be to me useful, instead of me to take care of everything. Having arrived, let I will better have a good time, and my affairs will already be settled. It costs nothing to it: it has everywhere aide-de-camps who right there will take care of me.
There was it not empty chatter as I was convinced later. Also understood that before I at sale of oil and purchase of vodka was inflated. To me it was explained clearly by the same Hayche, having found me then the most solid dealers in oil who would not inflate me. I took higher price for oil, and it bought vodka to me in other distillyaena, is much cheaper also than the best quality. In a word, I with it was lucky.
It settled my affairs in one day, and I spent the remained two days by the most part at it in the house, in the best Grodno society. And such trips to Grodno I did eight in a year. And everyone was – true pleasure.
The emperor Alexander the Second came every year to Grodno on review. Grodnenskaya Square attracted it with the size and a beautiful arrangement of army at it. Usually in the summer from all county countrymen, landowners and Jews gathered, to see the emperor during review and all parade which for it was arranged in Grodno. I came annually to Grodno too at this time.
The emperor spent up to one and a half days to Grodno. At this time at Hayche was nobody. Everyone was busy with parade and the emperor. But I to it came also to this noisy time. Hayche then went outside seldom: there was a crush, and she did not suffer it.
"Stand, having stared and look", - she screwed up the face.
Once I stood near the emperor sitting on a horse at the moment when by there passed troops. Actually stood near his horse and faced to it directly. There was a wish to stare, attentively and long. The emperor was joyfully recovered, it was pleasant to see his strong body; and when it passed, I to it was absolutely beaten - so there were a wish to be closer to it …
I remember how once the tsar arrived to Grodno at half past one a.m., and at seven in the morning already went to review. In five I came to the street on which it had to pass. The emperor passed in the closed carriage together with the vilensky governor Potapov. The big crowd standing there began to shout:
"We want to see you, the tsar!" The governor general opened a door of the carriage and declared to crowd:
"The emperor all night long did not sleep. He wants to have a rest". The crowd, however, did not listen to it and continued to shout:
"We want to see you, the tsar!" Here the tsar opened a door of the carriage and told:
"Misters, I did not sleep all night long. Let's me take rest. From review I will go slowly in the open carriage, and you will see me".
And it happened: back it went in the open carriage, a slow step, and all saw it. I stood at a church where the tsar rose then by the balcony decorated with carpets and flowers. The Polish dean, and the tsar stood nearby, having given him a hand, asked to excuse that he has no time to visit a church. He right there got into the carriage and in the same way, at a slow pace, passed through all city, to the governor's house. Prepared for visit of the Russian church and a synagogue by it, but except as on a church balcony, it was not anywhere. Poles rejoiced at least to it. It always left impression good and strong.
Alexander the Second was seen by me several times, and every time, standing near it, I felt spiritual pleasure. It always treated the public surrounding it good-natured. There was it high, wide in shoulders and beautiful. At Nikolay, speak, there was very angry look. Ded Aron-Leyzer told that time was in Brisk when through it Nikolay passed. The big crowd gathered. All wanted to see the tsar including the grandfather.
The tsar seemed. It stood near the grandfather, and their views, the grandfather and the tsar, met.
"From this look to me it became terrible, - the grandfather shrank, - I forever remembered it" …
Alexander the Second arrival to Grodno was for Jews always a holiday. All of us rejoiced, and in day when it had to appear on the street, all gave up work and walked cheerful campaigns for the city.

Chapter 8
Conversation with Hayche on the female nature, on their faints and spasms. – Makarovtsa. – Russian and Polish priests. – Our conversations. – Whose religion is higher? – Surrounding eshuvnik. – Terrible days. – Take Eshuvniki a zyatk. – Purchase of the place in the shul.
I told Hayche as once became my wife badly how I took on Saturday from the Christian a coin in forty pennies a naked hand, but not through a rag as all Jews in villages and places do. In big cities at the same time behave in a different way. At all restaurants and pothouses there are iron and copper plates with the scratched name of the owner, and all Warsaw Jews not capable to cost Saturday without beer buy on Thursday these plates in which pay on Saturday for beer and wine. It is clear, that all Jews trading in alcohol worked on Saturday as unbearable. Whether a joke – how many it was drunk on Saturday in Warsaw of beer!
Personally I was against such concessions which were afforded by Jews. It is known that a ban to Jews to touch money – so-called "mukets" - exists for the sake of spirituality. Without money – anywhere not to move, not to buy and not to sell. And here – the Jew takes and does to himself of the same metal – copper or even iron – some kind of kosher money – and can already work all Saturday as a horse. Leaves – if your name is scratched – that is possible and if imperial – that is impossible.
I told about it Hayche. She answered me so:
"Lovely young man! Do not trust women with their faints. I will tell you as I once regularly fainted …. Slightly that – a faint. It is worth not to receiving what I want – I faint …"
Looked with a smile and continued:
"I grew up, the lovely young man, without father. By sixteen years was very beautiful girl, was considered as well as clever. I wrote then on Hebrew and in Russian while the Jewish girls were not capable to scratch any letter. It was not accepted to sit in girls after sixteen years, and I married and arrived to the small town to the father-in-law, the rich Jew with the fifty-thousand capital. His only son became my husband. The father-in-law wanted to take for the son the wife from a good family, with all advantages, even without money. And I was suitable party. A dowry of a distance for me only three hundred rubles. My father long was ill, did not grow poor yet. There were after the father several thousands of rubles and a lot of silver, but I had two more sisters and the brother, and still too it was necessary for mother and when concluded shidukh on which money was not required, I from the dowry consisting of one thousand rubles took only three hundred, and gave the rest to sisters.
When I arrived to the town on bread to the father-in-law, at me darkened in eyes. The father-in-law had a big apartment house, but everywhere there were simple wooden white benches and tables, fir-trees from the enameled bowls, rough plates, iron spoons. Ate just well, in anything the shortcoming was not, but all simply. So was in food, and in all behavior. Tea was drunk from a pot and that to the tea – it could not be taken in a mouth.
The city rabbi was the father-in-law friend. Visited us on Saturday during "seven blessings" 1. I to it, it is visible, it was pleasant, and the next Saturday he with the husband invited us. Having been pleasant to the rabbi, and then and a ravvinsha, I was already pleasant also to all town, and began to keep with advantage, is proud.
I let know that I would like that gradually at us would eat with silver spoons, from beautiful faience plates, instead of simple benches there would be a canape and chairs – as at our place.
Though my father also grew poor, but ate at us with silver spoons. I considered that in the house of my father-in-law, the rich Jew, it has to be even richer. I so loved expensive furniture, beautiful tableware, mirrors on walls, long soft paths under legs … But there's nothing to be done? To ask the father-in-law to decorate the apartment – it is impossible. The Jew old already – who can change him? Only once I told it that I cannot sustain to live in such rough situation.
"You are rich, and live as the rich man. I cannot eat from such plates, such spoons, I cannot sit on rigid simple benches. I got used to sit on soft chairs and on a canape, as at my father …"
The father-in-law answered that he can give me as a gift, for example, one thousand rubles, but change the behavior – peculiar and to his ancestors, he cannot … Both we love furniture of my father, and he likes his simple tables and benches.
Here I resorted to the female weapon – fainted. … In the house noise was made, all fatally were frightened. In such small town all right there ran together to me to the aid... After I was brought round, the father-in-law asked:
"Well, tell me, the daughter that you want that I bought you?"
I right there recovered and answered:
"Give me three hundred rubles, I will go to Grodno, I will buy furniture, tableware, etc. household things".
But nothing helped – he did not agree.
So there passed half a year more. The father-in-law and the husband loved me, but I did not manage to achieve the from them. I began to faint again ….
And here the father-in-law gave up – I the faints achieved everything that I wanted …
But there had to be a measure, and I in the celebration forgot about it. I remember, once to me it became bad, and the husband brought me round. And I hear how he at the same time speaks:
"Hayche, Hayche, will come the moment that to you it will become bad, and I will not bring you round …"
And, and! – here I really was frightened. If so, but is not necessary. I right there got up and told:
"I am healthy … More you should not recover me".
Now Hayche laughed at men whom women fool and try to obtain from them everything on light feigned faints. She called men by rags.
The men sitting at me in the room laughed, listening to my stories to the wife about Hayche's faints, and judging by her reaction, was it seems that also it stopped being engaged in it too …
Was to me then not bad, I earned enough. In the long winter evenings read philosophical books to which always had a big inclination and on which spent a lot of time.
My wife would wish that I turned near Rozenblyum more from what would have more advantage. But I did not want it. Not in my character was to flatter. And you never know the woman speaks … Women would swallow the whole world. One good book was more expensive me than all rozenblyum with all their money.
Every year I laid several honeycombs of rubles, and life so-so proceeded. Occasionally I talked to the neighbor, the Polish priest, very scientific and pious Christian. But much he did not like to speak.
The Russian priest on the contrary - was too simple: knew a little, but at the same time had more heart, and we well got on with it.
It was high, thick, healthy and good-natured. Came around on the three of horses and sat till several hours. Piety in it was a little, and before small offenses he was the big hunter …
The Polish priest, in return, frightened me what not to see to me paradise:
"Consider, Hatskel that Jews in paradise are not let … Jews are tormented … there", - he pointed a finger at the sky.
"And you why are sure that you in future world are loved?" – I Asked it.
So we altercated with it. I remember how once he proved to me that as regards miracles Christ is higher than our Moshe. Moshe such could not do that as at visit of the city by Christ, there were all dead persons on a cemetery buried hundreds years ago and would send it navstrechu2. This Moshe could not. I answered it it the fact that the teacher told our Saadiya-gaon3 somewhere on other wire:
When, tell that someone drank a water barrel in ten buckets, and someone – the whole well of water, the third – drank the whole river, and the fourth – the sea ocean, is asked: who showed more miracle here, and the answer has to be that all is identical because if the person who is not able to drink more glass of water drank ten buckets, this same miracle as well as to drink the whole sea ocean; because as it is impossible to drink the sea, it is also impossible to drink also ten buckets.
And the person can divide the sea? And the person can receive water from the rock? And can feed with a manna sixty great number of Jews in the desert the person? Both nobody can make.
It is clear, that we could not win against one another. And somehow he asked me:
"As you can speak in the prayers: "You elected us from all people, loved us and claimed us and ennobled us over all languages", etc. – and how you can attribute to the Lord such vile lie? You are killed, cut, burned down, disgraced, torn to parts and trampled down legs, and you come then to God with such rough lie? Yes same shamelessness! …"
"Panich, - I answered him, - if it was not so, then for what to your Christ would be to be born among Jews? Same a sign that the Lord elected Jews from all people! …"
It to it a little bit reduced to spirit.
At my neighbors, eshuvnik, I was considered for noble. I, for example, could study what they in the majority were incapable of. And when came on Saturdays to a minyan in Byalu-Koz to the miller, I was asked to stand from the Roll of the Torah and to distribute invitations. Eshuvniki was not known that with me to do what to give occupation. Also decided to collect minyan to a prayer at my place. Also it turned out so that praying every Saturday there was more and more. And than further, more and more eshuvnik began to come from everywhere.
For society I had absolutely special advantage: I subscribed for "Ha-Melits" 4 and "Ha-Maggid" 5. It was the source of news which society so needed. Over time my eshuvnik became big "politicians", greedy snatching on newspapers and shared with each other as a tidbit.
Rozenblyum, in return, received the Warsaw daily newspaper, and I, thus, could him, according to Rozenblyum, give also oral addition to news and policy, so, that they could outdo Bismarck in policy. And what with me was in the seventieth year, during French-Prussian war! Were pounded, as in a beehive, all scary anxious. Even among a week came for news. Not a joke - the Jewish news!
One week prior to Rosh - ha - Shana I already began to gather to departure with the wife, children and with all good in Krinki. Thanks to Saturday three days of a holiday turned out. Rozemblyum went to Rosh - ha - Shana and Yom Kippur to Warsaw and disposed to prepare for me in the estate two big vans with couple of horses everyone.
To Rosh - ha - Shana eshuvnik were going to go all society to the city, with tableware and with ware. In the village there is no Jew left. Eshuvnik could be sick, the wife – on snosyakh, and all the same went. Went with babies, with small children, with sick and weak. It was possible to collect in the village minyan never during this period. In the Doomsday each Jew had to be in shul.
In process of approach of Rosh - ha - Shana men went with wives to the city behind clothes for themselves and children. As for adult, marriageable girls - here dresses prepared with all chic. Rich eshuvnik brought to themselves the tailor with the assistant and held on a month. After that were to the city to Rosh - ha - Shana and walked about in the new, rustling dresses.
Citizens brought closer to themselves eshuvnik, them zhalelya: poor creatures live the whole year in the village among goyev, without bet-midrash, without bath and without mikva …
Stuck to Eshuvniki to Rosh - ha - Shana widely, taking a special satisfaction from communication with city. Shidukhim consisted in the majority to Rosh - ha - Shana. The grown poor, ruined citizens became related with the well-founded eshuvnik who always had the piece of bread. Let they lived simply, but there was almost enough bread at all; what to tell – life at rich eshuvnik very good.
In those days eshuvnik took usually the sons-in-law teachers. They asked to find in the city of the relatives and good acquaintances to their daughters the groom from among pupils bet-midrashy, coming mostly to study from other cities as I already described earlier. They then were enough as water after a batch of the matsovy test. The real fair of grooms happened during Terrible days. Before Rosh - ha - Shana each eshuvnik chose to himself the pupil - depending on the situation – how many it can give a dowry – and in most cases to Rosh - ha - Shana the contract with the young man which parents lived in other place was signed. The young man with the bride did not dare to tell with each other words. Exchanged the burning, secret views from far away, and only heart knocked, knocked, knocked …
The ambassador Rosh - ha - Shang was written by the young bachelor to parents that he was pleasant to an eshuvnik, dear owner or the rich man who takes it in sons-in-law. Right there the consent on shidukh came from parents, and "conditions" were right there written. If parents of the fellow could, then came for the signature of "conditions", and is not present – did without them …
At such pupils it happened that there were they not such experts. One attracted the look, another – language. And, having been to the father-in-law to the settlement on bread, such "pupil" received the certain room with the wife and "studied", singing beautiful melodies. Sometimes he did not look in the book at all, and sang from Gemara by heart, and the father-in-law with the mother-in-law derived pleasure …
Nothing could be compared to their pleasure. They deeply believed that thanks to the scientific son-in-law they will have eternal paradise. It is clear, that there was it, generally to poor eshuvnik.
The swell spent the first year, without having moved with a finger. Ate the best and the most tasty and sang from Gemara.
Passed a little bit time, and zyatyok declared that it is necessary for it other Gemara – this he already studied. The father-in-law got Gemara at rich eshuvnik - rich eshuvnik almost all had Talmud sets – and the father-in-law rejoiced. Soon the son-in-law said to the father-in-law again that he learned also this treatise and following wishes. The father-in-law got the new treatise with big pleasure and, happy there is more former, brought to the son-in-law.
Young people went on the house, is proud looking at all, - and it is necessary to admit that even the peasants coming into tavern to drink vodka, also had respect for these young hozyaychik.
"Scientific people! …", - they respectfully muttered.
Eshuvniki also willingly became related with other eshuvnik, the neighbors when the girl and the boy of each other knew. For the boy they even held melamed. The girl was not taught absolutely. Sometimes several eshuvnik took together a melamed for boys; studied at one of eshuvnik. This eshuvnik of a melamed fed, and for other boys melamed charged a fee. Paid a melameda usually thirty, forty rubles for term. Fifty rubles for term – were already huge sum.
Rural melameda, however, in the majority were not able to learn, and boys-eshuvniki left ignoramuses.
Rich eshuvnik took for the sons-in-law, really, big experts. Money all is possible dokazat6. In the Nikolaev times in general there were few eshuvnik, and decent Jews, of course, did not want to become them. They considered it as something unworthy. Jews recognized only rent of inns or estates.
After the Polish revolt, however, when many Jews lodged in the Polish manors and the woods, noble, well-born Jews began to rent inns and estates at Jewish landowners. Then all Jewish aristocracy rushed to villages, and daughters of eshuvnik dressed up with big chic. And at once disappeared or strongly the bad opinion on eshuvnik as about ignoramuses decreased that remained till our time. The sixtieth years taught Eshuvniki already the girls as boys were held outstanding melamed.
And just at this time I held Makarovtsa. It was already the seventh, eighth year after the Polish revolt. Almost most worthy, distinguished and rich Jews lodged in villages. In my time eshuvnik were already held in big high esteem. Went to the city to Rosh - ha - Shana with a big pomp, and their places in shulyakh and bet-midrasha were from the best.
Before Rosh - ha - Shana I went to buy places. In the krinkovsky shul there was very remarkable place - at the aron-kodesh where there is always and everywhere a rabbi.
I got the place and felt among noble, towered. But the majority of eshuvnik as it is told, had "worthy" places, and I do not know whether I enjoyed more, than they …
Rivalry because of honor was very strong.
