Tragedy of the village of Kamenka

"We grieve and we remember"
All village is burned,
Also costs on that place
This monument to grief,
Human honor.
Nobody to help them
That minute could not,
Only shouts and groans
Are heard izdalek.
From our memory
Not to erase this grief,
Not healed heart
Disturbs us again.
Let are far
War echoes,
To forget those days –
Not in forces we!

In Kobrin district there is a small village with the simple name Kamenka. Its history shook me to the bottom of the heart. About what happened to residents of this village in days of the Great Patriotic War we were told by the woman from of Zakrosnits Maria Filippovna Petruchik.

When she was a small child, Maria Filippovna's mother often visited the sister in Kamenka and left the girl there to stay for a while. Once it, as usual, left the daughter, but suddenly returned after the journey and took away as if had a presentiment of trouble. They left, and in several days in this village there was a tragedy. About it we were told by the inhabitant of Kamenka Ivan Longvinovich - in the childhood he witnessed not only, but also the participant of those terrible events. The death of the village which occurred on his eyes so shook the boy that he remembered endured in mind. Ivan Longvinovich told that that day it was very silent and hot, nothing portended trouble. Unexpectedly villagers saw Germans who surrounded the village from three parties. At first fascists behaved quietly and touched nobody. Residents of the neighboring villages handed over milk and quietly came back. Suddenly behind group of fellows villager two lagged behind - whether for fear ran, whether just wanted to catch up with the others. The automatic turn was following distributed to them. In the sky the roar of planes was heard. The village was surrounded. Germans received a signal to start destruction of Kamenka. As the eyewitness told, Hitlerites were worse than monsters. They forced inhabitants to lay down on the earth and beat them with sticks. Lying facedown, people could not even cover themselves with hands. Fascists shot those who rose and tried to run in a back. All village was horrified. From all directions shouts and crying of children were distributed, but Germans were ruthless. People ran up in different directions, but in way they were overtaken by bullets. Residents of Kamenka were powerless to resist to the armed fascists. When firing ended, Germans drove all women, old men and children, hackneyed and wounded in one shed and set fire. Nobody could help them, in all village only wild groans and shouts which rushed from a shed were heard. Inhabitants burned alive in this terrible hell. Behind a veil of a smoke nothing was visible. Only the little managed to escape and hide that day. The woman was one of survived. Having pressed to a breast of the child, it crept through potato, and Germans did not see it. The others died. Were burned alive.

The small village of Kamenka of Kobrin district was so destroyed. The tragedy claimed the lives of 180 people. It happened on September 6, 1942.

There passed time, life in the village revived. But memory of the tragedy did not leave people indifferent. Those who survived dreamed the died family. One of residents of Kamenka was so shocked by village history that in memory of all dead cut out from a tree of 180 crosses and established on the place of death of people. Villagers said that it was impossible to look at it without tears and a sinking heart. Over time crosses disappeared, and inhabitants did not even see how it occurred. Subsequently on the place of the tragedy the monument to "The grieving mother and the soldier with the child", and also plates with surnames of the victims of fascism was established. Only 180 surnames - men, women, children.

On the eve of celebration of the 60 anniversary of liberation of Belarus from fascist aggressors at a monument paths were filled in, beds are made. By own efforts residents of the village established a small obelisk with a cross and an icon here. The inscription says about memory to the victims of fascism.

We listened to this story with a sinking heart. How many horror those who died from hands of executioners took out! How many courage was required to those who survived! Low bow and imperishable memory to the dead. A good health that who is still living. Thanks to veterans that we live on this earth in the world and wellbeing. Many paid for it expensive price - gave the life. Memory of the dead will be always live in our hearts.
